I’m going to refrain from mentioning obvious sites of artists or publishers that I like and instead direct you to some other cartoonists and illustrators that maybe you don’t know, but really should. Of course they’re all on the brink of super-fame, so you might be hearing about them RIGHT THIS MINUTE!

  • First Second Books – okay, I know I said I wouldn’t list any major publishers, but they’re publishing my first graphic novel that I’ve been working on with MK Reed, and they publish many other fine, fine comics.
  • Jason Rainey – my good friend and collaborator for many, many years. He’s got a jet engine where his brain should be.
  • Tyler Owings – his work is quiet, fanciful, a little bit scary, but always masterly crafted and beautiful.
  • Amber Rowland – Amber and I make women’s panties and other miscellaneous goodies together. Check it out.
  • Meg Hunt – a good friend and one of the hottest shit illustrators working today. She’s big and getting bigger.
  • Tugboat Press – Greg Means is a local publisher here in Portland. His anthology Papercutter has won two Ignatzes and it’s one of the few anthologies out there that is actually showcasing new and undiscovered cartoonists. Three cheers for Greg!
  • MK Reed – MK wrote the script for Americus, which will be the first graphic novel for both of us. She’s a great writer with a real knack for dialogue.
  • Calvin Wong – one of the funniest cartoonists I’ve ever met in my life. Calvin’s writing, creativity, and production volume should be admired and feared.
  • Ted Stearn – one of my mentors and all-time favorite cartoonists.
  • Nate Beaty – cartoonist and web-designer extraordinaire.
  • Malcolm McClinton – I was introduced to his work when I used to play Legend of the Five Rings. Turns out he lives in Portland and not only is an awesome illustrator, but a super nice guy to boot!
  • Joey Weiser – a fellow SCAD graduate and cartoonist whose output puts most of us to shame.
  • Ron Chan – another friend from college and member of Periscope Studios here in town.
  • Crump- Brittney Crump’s work is as adorable and funny as she is.
  • Drew Weing – Drew is part of a cartooning power couple that will take over comics. See Eleanor below.
  • Eleanor Davis – another super-hot-shit cartoonist. The other part of the cartooning power couple I mentioned above.
  • Chad Thomas – a super nice guy who wields a mean, mean brush.
