Science Comics: Wild Weather: Storms, Meteorology, and Climate

My second graphic novel was another team up with my good friend, MK Reed. This time we would be working on the acclaimed First Second series Science Comics, tackling the weather in Science Comics: Wild Weather: Storms, Meteorology, and Climate. I loved that MK framed the narrative in a local news station. It’s a little known secret that I love local news! I even dedicated the book to Matt Zaffino, KGW’s meteorologist and the best in the Portland Metro area. We even got to go on KGW for some promo stuff!!!

Wild Weather was published in April of 2019. It was also selected as one of the Texas Library Association’s Little Mavericks Reading List Books for 2021!

Process

This book was a first for me in a couple of different ways. It would my first full-color book. Knowing that coloring isn’t my strong suit, I hired my good friend Nyssa Oru to do the coloring for me.

It would also be the first project that I did almost 100% digitally. The only phase I didn’t do digitally was the thumbnails. The feeling of pencil to paper is essential to my decision making and problem solving process, so I kept that phase analog. I would end up scanning those thumbnails in and placing them into my digital file to use as a reference when drawing the final art. The benefit of doing tight thumbnails is that it saves you a lot of time in the drawing phase.

To the right is a quick slideshow of each step of the process of making final art.
